Shallow depth of field

One of my favorite photo effects is creating shallow depth of field. That basically means that an element in the picture is in focus, while the background (or foreground) is blurry. It makes for a nice effect, causing an element to "pop."

The ones below are the horrible fortune Jon got in his fortune cookie, my better fortune, and a rose.

Big fan of that rose. Also, that fortune cookie incident was so sad, first empty, then bad. Boo fortune cookies, but YAY that place, which had delicious food.
